Skeletons

Meet my friend: Mr Indiana Bones. This page has resources for KS1 and KS2. The KS1 items use common names for the bones and focus on the simple structure and functions of our skeleton. For KS2, the scientific names are used and there’s a focus on adaptation for different functions.

Meet Indiana Bones
For KS1. Simple bone names & the functions of the skeleton. Includes an explanation of how bones grow.

Name That Bone
KS2 – I stick labels all over Indiana Bones, using the scientific names. Full of daft ways to remember the names & ends with a recap.

Exploration of skulls
Using resin replica skulls, discover how teeth and eyes can give clues to whether an animal is a predator or prey. Works for KS1 and as an introduction to adaptation in KS2.

Supporting documents & activities

Skeleton dice game
Played like a ‘beetle drive’. Each player needs a copy of page 1 and a standard D6 die. Can be played as either colouring in, or printout p2 on card & cut out the bones. Use for either KS1 or KS2, using the appropriate level of language to name the bones as you place them.

KS1 crosswords
Two different puzzles. One is just picture clues: fit the words into the grid to reveal the longer word. The other is a more classic crossword with a mix of clue types. Both have a word bank that shows all the answers needed.

KS2 Crossword
Bumper crossword for the scientific bone names. The clues are in different forms: standard ‘clues’, pictures, code to break (A=1 B=2 C=3), mixed up letters to unscramble, fill in the words missing from the paragraph, and some words to just fit in & write your own clue. Page 1 is the blank grid & picture clues. Page 2 has initial letters for a bit of extra help. Remaining clues are on p3. Solution on p4.

Loop cards
To help the transition from common names to scientific names, play this set of loop cards to make the connections. eg ‘foot bones’ links to ‘metatarsals’, ‘jaw’ links to ‘mandible’. The file is the cards in the correct order. I recommend that you print two copies & keep one set intact for checking!

KS1 wordsearch
Common names of bones & body parts. Trickiest one is ‘shoulder’. Across & down only Includes solution on p2.

KS2 wordsearch
Scientific bone names & vocabulary. Across, down & diagonal. Solution on p2.
